Ruth Thomas - Counsellor

About Me
My name is Ruth Thomas and I am a Children and Young Persons Counsellor. I am registered with, and accredited by, the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I provide specialist therapy for children and teenagers/adolescents, and their families.

I am trained, qualified and experienced in a variety of evidence based approaches including Integrative Humanistic Counselling, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Therapeutic Use of The Arts (drawing, drama, sand-tray etc) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

I have worked as a Counsellor in a variety of settings in Education, Voluntary Sector and Private Practice for over 13 years and am DBS checked.

Therapeutic Work
My clinical practice has clear commitment to improving child and adolescent mental health, in a way that is useful to clients, and appropriate to their stage of psychological development and their wider world. 
My aim is help children, young people and their families to understand themselves, process their emotions and experiences and find ways of coping in order that they can thrive.

I work with a wide range of presenting difficulties including:

  • Anxiety including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks
  • Depression and Low Mood
  • Trauma (developmental and PTSD)  - including sexual, physical and emotional abuse, neglect, bereavement by suicide, serious accidents or events
  • Attachment Difficulties (the emotional bonds that connect one person to another)
  • Self-harm and Risk Taking Behaviours
  • Emotional Difficulties and Dysregulation causing distress, behaviour problems or relationship difficulties
  • Bereavement and loss, such as death of a loved one, changing schools, families separating, relationships changing and ending
  • I am able to adapt my clinical practice to meet the needs of children and young people with Neurodevelopmental Differences such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder and ADD/ADHD.

I am able to liaise with schools and colleges to provide information and advice about how they can help support your child’s emotional and psychological wellbeing or recovery.
